Quick Take: We Need to Stop Saying This

I am currently job hunting pretty hard, which means I spend a lot of time on LinkedIn, checking in at least daily, most of the time, to see what is new and looking for opportunities. On my most recent visit, I saw the above post as a recommended article. And being generally interested in politics, I clicked through for a read. It got me thinking, and that’s a good thing.

Normally I would take 2000 words here to discuss Biden’s budget, the pros and cons, and why this government expansion is bad news, even though it might do some good, including for me in particular. More government spending means more government jobs, or more tax credits for my kids, which can help keep me afloat as I continue to look for employment.

Instead, my quick take here is how out of touch is it to call this a “postwar era?” We’ve been engaged in kinetic hostilities with a single country for nearly two decades straight. There are soldiers fighting and dying in Afghanistan right now that were not born when the causus belli occured. Just because there have not been any declared wars does not make this, in any meaningful way, a postwar era. And no one should be using that language anymore.

As we enter another Memorial Day weekend, it really serves to remember that.
