The Necessity of Christ in A Christmas Carol

December 25, 2019

A Christmas Carol might be Charles Dickens’ most long-lasting work, despite being one of his shortest.  There are those who still read and enjoy his other works, such as Oliver Twist, which again regains modern legs with a musical rendition; or David Copperfield, who at least lends his name to someone moderately famous in the modern time.  Dickens’ classics are still frequently read, but most typically only among the well-educated. …

The Rise of Skywalker Won’t Let the Past Die

Rey vs Kylo Ren Lightsaber Battle
December 20, 2019

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker isn’t the movie anyone was looking for. J.J. Abrams certainly listened to Kylo Ren’s advice to “Let the past die. Rather than expand on the ideas introduced by Rian Johnson’s subversive and intriguing film, Rise of Skywalker walks back…

Avengers: Endgame Reaction

May 2, 2019

SPOILER ALERT: Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follows. Sometimes I get so hyped for movies that when I see them, I am ultimately disappointed. It’s rare when a sequel lives up to the original and almost impossible for the sequel to surpass it. After 11 years and 22 movies of build-up, not to mention the incredible lead-in and cliff-hanger of Infinity War, I was just hoping not to be too disappointed….

Why isn’t Captain America sexist?

April 3, 2019

One thing that surprised me about Captain Marvel was how confined the sexism was. Based on the commercials and trailers, I was expecting the movie to focus more on the constant challenges Carol faced on account of her being a female who was constantly partaking in stereotypical male pursuits like baseball, kart racing, and being a fighter jet pilot. Instead, the instances of sexism seemed relatively constrained to the villain (duh), one notable jerk, and a few extremely brief flashback scenes. If anything, the movie seemed notable for how progressive the heroes were. After all, SHIELD was willing to entrust their most valuable and powerful artifact to a female scientist and two female test pilots.
